Columbus, OH-Today at Riverside Methodist Hospital, a controversial procedure performed on cancer patient Dr. Raymond Lin, 57, of The California Institute of Technology Colorado was declared a triumph for man. EverLife, Inc. scientist Dr. Vernon Piermont and Riverside physician Dr. Melody Rosen Ehrlich both agreed that what they had attempted to accomplish was realized when Dr. Lin answered questions through an R-55 computer and demonstrated control over the functions of the robotic body he now inhabits.

“We are ecstatic,” said Dr. Piermont. “Dr. Lin can now write ‘eternal being’ on his resumé. Raymond’s consciousness, personality, memories all reside in one gloriously alert and competent package.”

Dr. Ehrlich was less emphatic about eternity but did agree that the operation had proved successful.

“Things were touch and go for a while there,” Dr. Ehrlich said, “but in the end, we showed that humans can exist in a non-human body.”

Not all scientists agreed with Ehrlich and Piermont on the success of the experiment.

“It’s much too soon to declare an end to death,” said Dr. Manuel Ortega of Green Ridge Hospital in Boulder, Colorado. “Dr. Lin is no more than a guinea pig in a cage right now. So much more must be done before we understand the true results. At this point, we don’t know how long Lin will remain coherent.”

In his message at morning mass, Pope John XXXI noted that serious doubts existed as to whether Dr. Lin could even be called a man.

“Dr. Lin as we know him is deceased,” said the Pope in his morning message on the subject. “The soul cannot be assigned to inanimate objects—no more than the Holy Spirit can exist in a phone or a hat. The soul can live in man only as long as the human being it occupies.”

President Merritt Sumter of the United States and many other leaders remained skeptical.

“It certainly appears that Dr. Lin is still among us, but we have a way to go before the claim can be made that Raymond is immortal,” said President Sumter. “Still, we can hope and pray that science has found a key to extend life.”

The experiment almost ended shortly after Dr. Lin was declared dead by the Riverside medical team. The robot, displaying a face that resembles Dr. Lin’s, lay motionless for some time before jerking violently and rolling off the table. All media coverage halted immediately.

“I for one thought we had lost Dr. Lin early on. It didn’t look good there at the beginning of transition. However, everything worked out in the end, for which we are eternally grateful. No pun intended.,” said Dr. Ehrlich.

Dr. Lin was not available for interviews after the procedure.

Letter to Chyou Lin from Dr. Raymond Lin: January 26, 2234

Dearest Darling,

I hope my letter finds you in good spirits and that the last few days have not made you anxious or concerned about me. I am doing well, although the recent changes in my habits have caused some confusion and irritability in me. You heard me right, Chyou—I have not been myself, have I?

I know that you saw the video of the procedure along with our children and grandchildren and others. I hope no one became terrified for me. Let me explain those moments when no coverage was allowed.

Though some claim I lost consciousness when my body died, I can assure you that I knew what was occurring to me always. At first, I felt that I had been squeezed into a long, narrow cylinder. The pressure was akin to being miles and miles under water. Although these thoughts inhabited my being, for the first time in my existence I did not really feel other sensations other than the claustrophobia, especially pain.

I was so relieved not to experience the severe pain anymore, but I had little time to celebrate. Though Dr. Piermont advised me that I would not be able to control my new body for some time, my attempts to deal with the pressure resulted in a series of movements of which I was quite aware. I could not see right away, but I somehow had a dizzying sense of imbalance. My attempts to right myself must have looked frenzied and disquieting to others, but I promise you I felt no danger or alarm.

Suddenly, like turning on a monitor, all my senses kicked in. The unexpected blare of sound startled me most. Then, I could feel my body, the floor, and I realized where I was. After a good fifteen minutes or more (I confess I no longer have a trustworthy gauge to measure time), I learned how to control my movements properly.

Though I remain unable to speak (the scientists are working on that), I can communicate by some computer language I was unaware of before now.

I am sure I will be locked away from society for some time yet—at least until I can function like a reasonable human. I will continue to write to you when I am allowed. A Mr. Amundsen will act as courier. We have much to talk about, my dear Chyou. Looking forward to your letter.

Yours for all time,

Ray

EverLife God-grab an Undeniable Hoax

By Senator Harvey E. Broomfield

The televised farce of Dr. Lin’s so-called transformation into a god has been proven to be nothing more than a magician’s trick—a bad one at that. Though this senator was invited to attend yesterday’s event and naturally refused to be a part of the theatrics, I did watch the monkey show on live television along with many of you.

For those of you who may be confused about the intent of the “procedure”, EverLife has unabashedly insisted that the experiment would prove that a living human being’s consciousness (soul, if you will) could be transferred intact from his or her body into the lifeless form of a robot. The body would be declared dead, and the robot would then become the eternal repository of one human spirit. In other words, the very essence of man, created by our Holy Lord, would be improved by science to the point where he has no needs, no human desires, no need of God, Himself.

This transformation (and you will not read this obvious point in any of EverLife’s literature) would elevate man (Man in their eyes) to rival God Almighty! This, as you can easily see, is utter blasphemy!

And what is their proof that this impossible deed in fact occurred in Columbus yesterday? Some questions were asked of Dr. Raymond Lin before his death. EverLife says that the questions were answered by Lin with no one else’s knowledge and recorded in a special, secret drive on a computer. When the robot recovered from what appeared to be an epileptic fit (this was also staged for effect, I believe), it was able to answer the same questions verbatim. What a poor trick that turned out to be. The answers were stored on a computer. What controls the robot? A computer. How hard would it have been to secretly share those answers with the robot beforehand? Why, a third grader could have done it.

The real trick was played on Dr. Lin, who was murdered in an attempt to foist this unforgivable ruse upon us! Yes, Raymond Lin’s days were numbered, that is true, but wouldn’t his last days have been better spent with his loved ones? Dr. Lin never even got to say good-bye to his wife of thirty-eight years! For what?

I will tell you for what, concerned citizens. The President is using EverLife to outfit an arsenal with robots impersonating dead men—or perhaps men secreted in an unknown hide-out to laugh at our gullible stupidity. What will happen when President Sumter himself is “converted” to one of these Evil Droids? Why, you and I will have to obey a robot—a robot programmed to carry on Sumter’s evil agenda. And for how long? Infinity!!

I personally hope that God Himself will swoop down and punish the evildoers, but we all know that God chooses to work through each one of us. Please join the pushback against these scientists and political hacks to show them that we can’t be fooled by tricks and dark mirrors. I guarantee that God will be on OUR side, friends!

Letter to Dr. Raymond Lin from Chyou Lin: January 31, 2234

Dearest Ray,

I want to thank you so much for your letter. I can’t believe you were able to send off a letter so quickly. I am so very happy for you, Ray. You are not feeling any pain and you never will again. I am thinking how the pain ruled your life for the past year and more, and to think it will never have power over you again!

Of course, there were some scary moments as we watched the televised event in the home theater. We became rather terrified, I’m afraid, when the robot (now you) seemed to have a fit and fell off the table. We became even more anxious after the broadcast went black. As we discussed, we had invited both our families over to watch with us, and they could not have been more supportive when things looked so bleak. Your mother, especially, calmed me.

Would you please thank the EverLife team and the medical staff for helping to pull you through? I want them to know how grateful the family feels. We owe them a great debt that we can never pay back, except in our gratitude. I know that you agree.

I know it is too soon for me to bring this up, but I must discuss this before anything should happen to me. When I die, Ray, I insist that you remarry or at least move in with a dear and trusted friend after my death. I am not expecting to die for a good, long while, but now that you have eternity to deal with, please don’t think that I would want you to live it alone. We all need intimacy, Ray, and I want you to be able to share your life with someone else. I at least wanted to state my opinion on this for the record. We won’t have to talk about it again if you like.

Have they yet indicated the date on which you can finally be released? I’m hoping you will join us here soon. Dr. Ehrlich assured me that I will recognize you immediately and that your personality hasn’t changed one bit. I’m so happy for that! Tam and Harry send you their love as well and are looking forward to your return almost as much as I am.

With Love,

Chyou

Award Speech for Dr. Cummings R. Elliot (by Dr. Raymond Lin) at the Nobel Prize Awards for 2234. December 13, 2234, in Stockholm, Sweden

Your Majesty, Your Royal Highnesses, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is with great honor that I present the 2234 Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine to Dr. Cummings Reginald Elliot for his masterful work concerning the physiology and pathology of the human brain. His work culminated only this year with the transition of one human consciousness into the digital memory of a computer, for which I, for one, am eternally grateful.

Dr. Elliot’s work has eliminated man’s three worst enemies: pain, suffering, and death. Though Dr. Elliot himself died twelve years ago, the award will be posthumously shared by Cummings’s wife, Marvella and the company he began, EverLife, Inc.

We have long known that the human brain is more than a collection of nerves, gray matter and neurons. It contains the very essence of a man or woman or other-gendered human. Before now, the death of a human body also meant the death of the mind or consciousness in that body. This year, 2234, the door to eternity has been unlocked by the work of many, Dr. Cummings R. Elliot being the foremost of that distinguished group. Had it not been for Dr. Elliot, the transformation of man to eternal being would have been delayed centuries or even millennia, according to his colleagues.

Dr. Manuel Estevez’s work with low emittance electricity led Elliot to discover a way to match the Beta frequency of active brain transmissions. From there, he was able to digitize the brain transmissions and develop a digital interface that could receive and interpret the messages into the computer language, PADL-II. With the computer inserted into a simple DROID-X robot, Dr. Elliot digitized the brain transmissions of a chimpanzee named Hawley. The chimp, actively learning for a period of one week, could control the actions of the robot through a series of thought transmissions. Dr. Elliot later repeated the experiment using a live human subject.

However, the leap from living human to the continuation of the mind after death proved to be Dr. Elliot’s supreme contribution to humanity. After he and fellow scientists spent years developing a mathematical algorithm to simulate the responses and thought patterns of hundreds of human subjects, Dr. Elliot announced the time was right to continue the consciousness of the human mind after the death of the body. Unfortunately, Dr. Elliot died shortly after his announcement

This is where the science becomes a bit more personal ladies and gentlemen and honored guests, for the human mind in question belongs to me. Some say that Dr. Raymond Lin died in that now famous procedure. I can assure you that I never lost even one second of consciousness and that the man they took for dead is the same man that stands before you now. Yes, my body has changed, but my mind has continued to live after death.

Only now, I have the brain capabilities of no other man on Earth. Thanks to Dr. Elliot’s work, I am on the cusp of discovering new uses for geothermal energy that will stem the tide of global warming and even reverse the effects over time. Can you imagine the wonderful new discoveries that other human bots will discover over the next few years? I believe we are on the brink of a new age Renaissance in which humans like me will eventually create a Utopia on Earth.

Through the work I have described here and numerous other discoveries by Dr. Elliot I have not mentioned for the sake of time, The Nobel Prize Selection Committee awards Dr. Cummings R. Elliot with the 2234 Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine.

First “Immortal” Being Dead at 67; Cremated 2nd Time

Pittsburgh, PA—The EverLife Company, Inc. announced today that Dr. Raymond Ing Lin, 67, of Boulder, Colorado has died. Lin will forever be remembered as the first person to have his conscious mind converted to a computer program and inserted into a digital robot on January 23, 2234, creating the first immortal human being as was stated at the time.

Dr. Lin was the geophysicist in charge of geothermal research at the California Institute of Technology, Colorado at his death.

Dr. Lin’s death has been attributed to malignant computer viruses that have plagued him for the past 3 years. Dr. Vernon Piermont of EverLife stated they remain unaware of the origin of these viruses.

“We have 12 other persons in this vulnerable position and are doing everything we can to mitigate the dangers posed by the viruses,” said Piermont. “We shall succeed in memory of Dr. Lin.”

Lin was born on November 6, 2176, to Hu and Evelyn Lin in Cambridge, England. Lin emigrated to the United States in 2194, eventually receiving his master’s from the University of Chicago and doctorate from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena.

Lin is survived by his wife, Chyou, daughter, Tamela (Veraj) Jonas, son, Harold (Melly) Lin, and three grandchildren.

Cremation services will take place next Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Eternal Rest Sanctuary in Boulder.
